Liberal Democrats Call for Borough-Wide Parking Strategy

Redcar & Cleveland Liberal Democrats are calling for a comprehensive and consistent Parking Strategy across the borough, following what they describe as a “scattergun approach” to parking charges by the current council administration.
The call comes after a recent meeting of the council where Hutton Ward Councillor Jemma Joy raised concerns over the recent changes to parking fees at the Pinchinthorpe (Branch Walkway) car park, where charges have increased by up to 25%, despite some other areas in Redcar & Cleveland seeing reductions in parking costs.
“This scattergun approach is confusing, unfair, and lacks any clear strategic direction,” said Cllr Joy.
“In Hutton Ward, people are rightly frustrated to see charges rise significantly while other areas see much lower changes, and in some cases, cuts. We need a parking strategy that works for the whole of Redcar & Cleveland — not a postcode lottery.”
The Liberal Democrats argue that the current parking policy lacks clarity and transparency, creating disparities across the borough and harming local residents, and local businesses.
“Parking affects our town centres, tourism, and the day-to-day lives of residents,” added Cllr Joy.
“We’re not against sensible fees — but they must be fair, proportionate, and part of a borough-wide plan that balances local needs, environmental concerns, and economic development.”
The Lib Dems are now urging the council to go back to the drawing board and develop a clear, evidence-led Parking Strategy, with input from residents, local businesses, and community groups. The group argues that a joined-up approach is essential to ensure a fair deal for residents, tourists, and businesses alike.
